Today in Welsh history... 30 November 1199, Gerald of Wales made his first visit to Rome to put forward his case to Pope Innocent III that he be made Bishop for the Diocese of St David's after being overlooked for the post by King John. Gerald also appealed unsuccessfully to the Pope for St David's to be made an Archbishopric independent of Canterbury.
Gerald of Wales also known as Gerallt Gymro or Giraldus Cambrensis, was born at Manorbier Castle in Pembrokeshire, he was of mixed Norman and Welsh descent. His father, William FitzOdo de Barry, was one of the most powerful Anglo-Norman barons in Wales and his mother Angharad was a first cousin of Rhys ap Gruffydd, the Lord Rhys.
Gerald accompanied Baldwin, the Archbishop of Canterbury, on a tour of Wales in 1188. The 'Itinerarium Cambriae' (1191), an account of that journey, and the ' Descriptio Cambriae' (1194) remain valuable historical documents, significant for their descriptions of Welsh and Norman culture.

Since our post about the petition in Wales yesterday and despite us sharing on many groups and platforms as we are sure many people are doing, this petition has only crept up by a few hundred. Is it being suppressed or manipulated in some way?
It is clearly an important debate so let's all make a concerted effort to sign and share. With the followers on this channel alone, we can more than cover the 3.5k signatures needed. Sign it today.
You DO NOT need to be a Welsh resident to do so. Anyone can sign.

I realise I haven’t actually put up a post about this, I just replied to somebody in the comments on my channel, so here’s the current situation for anybody who’s interested:
🔹 Sam is due to be released from prison in a few weeks but he won’t be allowed to return home for “at least six months”, potentially up to 12 months.
🔹 He will have to stay at a premises of their choice so that they can monitor him closely because they believe there’s such a high risk of “serious harm”.
🔹 He has to check in there every evening and he can check out on a morning. He can leave through the day and go where he pleases, and his location will be monitored with a GPS tag. He has to check in at the premises every day at midday to ensure he doesn’t travel too far.
🔹 Sam also has other licence conditions that he must stick to for the remainder of his two year sentence. I’ll share them when we get them in writing so that friends and colleagues know what he can and can’t do.
🔹 The most important thing to Sam is his family and this licence condition is particularly harsh as it stops him from doing things like bath time/bedtime story time/putting his children to bed, but at least he can now see them every day, so we are looking forward to that. We can’t really go on day trips because of the midday check in but at least he can begin to build a bond with his baby, and he can see his toddler every day.
🔹 If Sam breaks his licence conditions he will be returned to prison. Once Sam’s two year sentence is over (1st March 2026), he is a free man and he can do whatever he pleases.

Today in Welsh history... 27 October 1914, Dylan Marlais Thomas was born in Swansea. His father was an English teacher at the local grammar school and would recite Shakespeare to Thomas before he could read.
He excelled in English and reading but neglected other subjects and dropped out of school at sixteen to become a junior reporter for a local newspaper.
In 1934, Thomas moved to London and published his first book of poems, to critical acclaim.
In January 1950, Thomas engaged on a reading tour in America, which was a great success. However, on a further tour in 1953, he collapsed in the Chelsea Hotel after a long drinking bout at the White Horse Tavern and on November 9th, he died at St. Vincent's Hospital in New York City at the age of 39.
