The Economic Court of Zhytomyr Region canceled the private ownership for the St. Basil's Convent in Ovruch on February 24, 2025. The monastery buildings are a monument of cultural heritage and, although they have been in private ownership since 2006, they will be "returned to state ownership," reports "Suspilne.Zhytomyr".
The lawyer of the UOC monastery indicated that the statute of limitations had long expired, but the court ignored this position.
Back on March 23, 2006, the executive committee of the Ovruch City Council adopted Decision No. 82 “On registration of ownership rights to real estate objects owned by legal entities and individuals.” However, according to the court, it was adopted with an excess of authority and in the absence of a decision of the owner (authorized state body) on changing the legal status of state property.
“This decision is illegal and subject to cancellation,” the court believes.
The lawyer for the St. Basil’s Convent of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church emphasized that the monastery did not and could not have been able to verify the legality of the decision of the local government body, did not commit any violations, and acted lawfully.
“The subject of the disputed legal relationship is the object – the household of the convent, therefore, the general limitation period of THREE YEARS applies to the claims, which began on 03/23/2006 and, accordingly, ended on 03/24/2009.
The prosecutor filed a corresponding claim with the court on 06/11/2024, that is, more than 18 years after the adoption of the contested decision and the expiration of the limitation period,” – the lawyer’s quote.
A similar scheme for alienating property was successfully implemented in Chernihiv. On January 16, 2025, the Supreme Court refused to satisfy the claim of the Chernihiv Eparchy of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church regarding the right to use the complex of the Holy Trinity Yelets Convent of the 12th-17th centuries. Now the Ministry of Culture will do whatever it wants in the temple.
And regarding Ovruch, we already wrote in 2022 that the authorities were giving an ultimatum: either the priests of the UOC will transfer to the OCU or they must vacate the churches.
The deputies of the Ovruch City Council even formalized this in the criminal Resolution No. 1255 of April 27, 2022 “On the Appeal of the Deputies of the Ovruch City Council to the Clergy and Parishioners of the UOC Parishes,” where they declared nonsense that the UOC “appropriated the name “Ukrainian Orthodox Church”” and is conducting anti-state activities.

Head of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) Vasyl Maliuk stated in a comment to Livyi Bereh that the European Union has allegedly imposed certain sanctions against the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (UOC).
“These [sanctions] have been implemented both in Europe and in Ukraine. But this work continues. In particular, the initiator is the Czech Republic. And we have worked on this together with our Czech colleagues. I continue this work. It is indeed a top-priority direction. At the same time, we remain committed to the principle of freedom of conscience and religion. There can be no doubts about that… If the 'ears' of Russian intelligence services are visible there, we will act accordingly,” Maliuk stated.
According to the LB editorial team, Maliuk was commenting on information that “the latest sanctions imposed by the National Security and Defense Council (NSDC) against certain individuals were introduced, among other reasons, due to identified cases of financing public organizations in the EU that engage in anti-Ukrainian activities and are linked to Russians, including religious communities.”
“As soon as there are sufficient grounds, we will implement this,” Maliuk said when asked whether such work could serve as a basis for introducing new NSDC sanctions.

◾️Shameful persecutions against the defenders of the UOC St. Michael's Cathedral in Cherkassy are going on.

Some days ago, the first court hearing took place in the case against the carer of the Martha and Mary Sisterhood, Father Oleksandr Smyk.
The courageous priest, who defended the shrine, was tried to be incriminated under Art. 296 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine - Hooliganism.
All these cases against Orthodox Christians began to appear immediately after the report of the UN Monitoring Mission, which recorded the attack of militants and OCU raiders on the cathedral. 2 months after the events.
According to our information, the prosecutor's office brought to court an incomprehensible video in which 2 people collided in the chaos of the assault, people lift them up, and they left.
Obviously, while realizing that the case cannot be closed with this, the prosecutor himself offered a reconciliation agreement.
Can you imagine, they tried to incriminate the priest with a serious criminal case, the punishment for which is imprisonment, for the fact that in the confusion he collided with another and himself fell.
At the same time, the case of monk Nektariy, who was beaten by OCU militants, who was broken his femur and damaged his ribs, is classified as an administrative "Minor hooliganism", with a penalty of a fine.

On February 24, 2025, after a prayer for the preservation of Ukraine, Archbishop Pimen of Rivne and Ostroh addressed the faithful with a sermon, expressing gratitude to the clergy of the Rivne Eparchy, who continue to stand with the people despite the difficult times for the Church.
