There are huge information asymmetries at work here in this battle between the establishment and DOGE/MAHA/MAGA. People are now flooded with information about the personalities and processes of the counterrevolutionaries but pretty much in the dark on the fullness of what they are fighting.
That’s because what they are fighting has been shrouded in mystery and secrecy for a century, having winnowed its way in public consciousness as the unchanging and implacable realities of governance to which people are accustomed (Stockholm Syndrome). It’s the infrastructure that exists and it has long been unquestioned and mostly unexamined.
The spotlight has never really been shown on this beast, so I suspect it is hard for people to understand who or what is actually being threatened. Musk and so on are highly public and inviting all kinds of judgements against them. They are new and known; what they are fighting is old and largely unknown.
Years ago, for whatever research project I was on (I cannot remember) I sauntered through the halls of the Department of Transportation. It was largely empty. Periodically I would see someone in an office with his feet up smoking a pipe (those were the days). It was a massive structure but absolutely nothing was happening.
I recall thinking: why doesn’t the Washington Post dig into the absurdities of this place, its budget, its employees, its actions, its obvious waste? It occurred to me that there could be a wonderful story here but it is never written. In thinking about it, I realized it was the same for every government agency.
I had not understood at the time that there has long existed a symbiotic relationship between the administrative state and the media: both will help each other provided each leaves the other uncriticized. The public sector would use the press and the press would always fall back on the army of the civil service for cover and legitimacy. The deal made all of their lives easier.
What this means is that the vast machinery of Washington, D.C., has been allowed to grow, operate, and thrive without serious oversight for many decades dating far back in time, probably stretching through the whole postwar period or maybe even to the Great War.
DOGE/MAGA/MAHA are attempting to both educate the public about the beast as the very same time they are trying to slay it. This is a difficult challenge to say the least. There is a reason why no administration has ever attempted this. The odds for winning are very low.
