"Middle East Eye" тобундагы акыркы жазуулар

🎥 A video filmed by Israeli soldiers driving through Rafah, in southern Gaza, shows the scale of destruction 19 months into Israel’s war on the besieged enclave.

According to Gaza’s Health Ministry, the number of Palestinians killed in Israel’s ongoing assault has risen to at least 52,810, with more than 119,473 wounded since the war began on 7 October 2023.
🎥 Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu thanked US President Donald Trump on Monday for his assistance in securing the expected release of US-Israeli captive Edan Alexander.

"The Prime Minister thanked President Trump for his assistance in securing the release of Israeli soldier Edan Alexander," said a statement from Netanyahu's team, after meeting in Jerusalem with US envoy Steve Witkoff and US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee.
🎥 US President Donald Trump said on Monday that he is considering lifting sanctions on Syria as the country begins to rebuild following more than a decade of civil war.

“We are going to have to make a decision on the sanctions, which we may very well relieve. We may take them off of Syria because we want to give them a fresh start,” Trump told journalists at the White House before departing on a trip to the Middle East.

Syria’s new government, which toppled longtime president Bashar al-Assad in December, has been urging the removal of Assad-era sanctions to help revive the country’s devastated economy and support reconstruction efforts.
🎥 Al-Aqsa Mosque’s Imam, Sheikh Ekrima Sabri, has condemned an attempt by Israeli settlers to bring a sacrificial offering into the mosque compound on Monday, calling it “a criminal, provocative act.”

Guards at Al-Aqsa Mosque reportedly thwarted the settlers’ attempt to bring a lamb into the courtyards via Bab al-Ghawanmeh, one of the mosque's gates, as part of a ritual linked to the second Passover holiday.

According to local sources, 594 settlers stormed the mosque compound that day, performing Talmudic rituals under heavy police protection, while restrictions were imposed on Palestinian worshippers.
🎥 Israeli army footage shows the moment the Red Cross hands over freed US-Israeli soldier Edan Alexander to the army following his release by Hamas.

Alexander, 21, was born and raised in New Jersey and was serving in the Israeli army when he was captured by Hamas in October 2023.

He was believed to be the last surviving US captive held by the Palestinian group in Gaza.
🎥 “Does this give them more humanity because they are Israelis while my loved ones are being named prisoners and they are tortured?”

Palestinian poet Mosab Abu Toha responded to criticism over questioning the hostage status of freed British-Israeli captive Emily Damari in an interview with MSNBC
📰 More than 30 California State University students are on a hunger strike to protest against Israel’s blockade of food and water going into Gaza, which has placed the enclave’s population at “critical risk” of famine.

The students began the hunger strike on 5 May. They are urging CSU to follow in the footsteps of San Francisco State University, which divested last year from weapons manufacturers Lockheed Martin and Leonardo, data analysis company Palantir, and construction company Caterpillar, following a student Gaza solidarity encampment last spring.

They said that students at UCLA, Stanford, and Yale Universities were also participating in the hunger strike

🎥 Syrian villagers in the Israeli occupied village of Al-Asha in the southern region of the country rejected and burned Israeli aid.

Israeli forces have extended their occupation of Syria since the ousting of former Syrian president Bashar al-Assad, with military incursions moving past demilitarised and buffer zones.
🎥 Aylul Al-Agha, only 23 days old, died after her family’s tent was bombed in Khan Younis on Sunday.

Aylul initially outlived her entire family including her mother, father and 18-month-old sister, Zina, before succumbing to her wounds shortly after.

According to the Al-Agha family-run Instagram page, this brings the total of those killed from the Al-Agha family to 171 people, including 40 children and 32 women.
🎥 Israeli soldiers and settlers harassed a Palestinian family and international observers in the occupied West Bank town of Al-Mughayyir on Saturday.

Footage shows illegal Israeli settlers advancing towards and verbally harassing an elderly Palestinian woman whose home was raided the previous day by the same settlers.

The surge in settler attacks and Israeli military violence in the occupied West Bank has led to the displacement of 40,000 Palestine refugees, according to Unrwa.
🎥 Criticising the Trump administration's dismantling of USAID in an interview with Bloomberg, American businessman and philanthropist Bill Gates said the governemnt's aid reductions had caused chaos worldwide.

Citing one example, he referred to the US government's cancelling of HIV prevention funds to Gaza, an area of Mozambique, in the mistaken belief that the money was being sent to Gaza, the occupied Palestinian territory in the Middle East.

The White House had caused controversy earlier this year when falsely claiming that the US was spending $50 million on sending condoms to Gaza as part of its foreign aid program.
🎥 Israel’s military has temporarily halted its assault on Gaza as it awaits the release of American-Israeli captive Edan Alexander from the besieged strip, reportedly scheduled for 6:30pm local time.

Hamas agreed to release Alexander following backchannel talks with the US. By contrast, Israel’s government has increasingly spurned captive release talks, announcing instead a plan to occupy the strip indefinitely, known as Gideon’s Chariots, which senior Israeli military officials have warned could result in the death of the remaining captives, only 21 of which are still believed to be alive.

In the brief window provided by the truce, expected to end at 8pm local time, Unicef has attempted to transport medical supplies to northern Gaza, one of the areas hardest hit by both the two-month long Israeli siege and Israel’s declaration of “red zones” covering 68 percent of the strip’s territory.
🎥“It’s time for us to stand in the gap”

Political activist Linda Sarsour says it’s time for US citizens to step up and use their privilege to keep the Palestine movement alive on the streets and in college campuses.

She tells The Big Picture’s Mohamed Hassan that international students and Green Card holders like Mahmoud Khalil, Rumeysa Ozturk and Mohsen Mahdawi have already risked too much and been punished for it.

📰 Urgent action is needed to save lives and avert further starvation, further deaths and a descent into famine”

The entire population of Gaza faces a critical risk of famine, with half a million people facing starvation, a global hunger monitor said on Monday, calling this a major deterioration since its last report in October.

The latest assessment by the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) analysed a period from 1 April to 10 May this year and projected the situation until the end of September, according to a summary of its key findings.

Israel has sealed off the Gaza Strip since early March when it resumed its devastating military campaign on the strip.

The IPC analysis found that 1.95 million people, or 93% of the population in the Israeli-blockaded Palestinian enclave, are living through high levels of acute food insecurity, including 244,000 experiencing the most severe, or “catastrophic”, levels.
📰 The Israeli government has not prioritised the safe return of captives amid its ongoing war on Palestinians in Gaza, a new investigation by Israeli news outlet Ynet has revealed.

According to the report published on Friday, both the government and the military are fully aware that army attacks pose a grave risk to the captives and have, in fact, already led to fatalities.

“The manoeuvre kills captives, not theoretically, it actually kills them,” a security source told Ynet.

The source cited a specific incident in November 2023 as an example, in which an Israeli air strike killed three Israeli captives along with a senior Hamas military commander, Ahmed Ghandour.

“That’s what happens when you're pursuing two conflicting objectives at the same time,” said the source, who holds a senior position in Israeli intelligence.

🎥 The US is “merging” its Office of Palestinian Affairs with its embassy to Israel, the State Department said on Tuesday, in a step that signals a much-anticipated downgrade in US relations with the Palestinians.

State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce said that US Secretary of State Marco Rubio had decided to end the Office of Palestinian Affairs, known as OPA, in its independent status and make it an office within the embassy.

The decision is "not a reflection on any outreach, or commitment to outreach, to the people of the West Bank or to Gaza", Bruce said.

📹 “This is deprivation by design.”

Jonathan Whittall, head of the UN’s humanitarian affairs office in Palestine, explains that Palestinians are deliberately being deprived of basic humanitarian necessities as Israel continues its blockade on Gaza.

Whitehall states that the situation in Gaza appears to be a deliberate dismantling of Palestinian life, as Israel’s ongoing air strikes on the besieged enclave are leading to widespread forced displacement.

He also explained, “Almost 70 percent of the strip is now either in a displacement zone or a “no-go” zone where people can’t reach.”

🎥 "Why is there no discussion in the US government about why we are spending billions of taxpayer dollars starving children in Gaza?"

Bernie Sanders took to the Senate floor on Thursday to condemn Congress for falling silent on the US government giving military aid to Israel.

He accused Israel of "ethnic cleansing" and the US of incitement: "Trump is encouraging the ethnic cleansing of 2.2 million people"
