Ukraine is counting on the Czech Republic’s support in pressuring Russia to agree to a 30-day ceasefire, President Zelenskyy said following a meeting with deputies and the President of the Czech Senate, Miloš Vystrčil.

“We discussed sustainable peace, the need for a complete and unconditional 30-day ceasefire, and additional pressure on Russia until a lasting silence begins. We are counting on the Czech Republic’s support.

I thank the Senate for adopting nine resolutions in support of Ukraine and for its role in advancing the international Crimean Platform.

We are also grateful for the support of our European integration. Ukraine is ready to open the first negotiation clusters as part of the EU accession process.

We hope that the unity and determination of EU member states will help make this happen as soon as possible.”

❗️On May 8, Ukraine, together with the rest of Europe and the world, will mark the 80th anniversary of the victory over Nazism.

We honor the memory of the Second World War, which left no Ukrainian family untouched. The front line swept through our land twice, and the Ukrainian people suffered immense losses—eight million lives lost, including five million civilians and three million military personnel.

More than six million Ukrainians fought in the ranks of the Red Army. Hundreds of thousands more joined resistance movements and the armed forces of the anti-Hitler coalition.

Today, a cruel and unprovoked war of aggression is being waged against the Ukrainian people—one of the nations that helped defeat Nazism and paid a terrible price for peace and freedom in Europe. During this war, Russian forces have committed hundreds of thousands of war crimes: 620 people killed, nearly 2,000 injured, and at least 20,000 Ukrainian children forcibly deported.

Executions of civilians, mass graves, rape, looting, hostage-taking, torture and execution of prisoners of war, the use of indiscriminate weapons, strikes on residential areas, energy facilities, and civilian infrastructure—the Russian army has committed and continues to commit atrocities in Ukraine on a scale not seen in Europe since World War II.

This is the same army that will march through Red Square in Moscow on May 9. These are not the liberators of Europe—they are occupiers and war criminals. Marching beside them is not a celebration of victory over Nazism, but a sharing of responsibility for the blood of murdered Ukrainian children, civilians, and defenders. Russia is inviting foreign military personnel to this parade in an attempt to whitewash its war crimes and justify its aggression.

The participation of foreign military personnel in this event is unacceptable and will be seen by Ukraine as a profound insult to the memory of the victory over Nazism and to the millions of Ukrainians who fought to liberate their homeland and all of Europe eight decades ago.

We urge all foreign states to refrain from allowing their military personnel to take part in the May 9 parade in Moscow. This appeal especially concerns countries that claim neutrality in the face of Russian aggression or maintain a neutral position in international affairs. The participation of their troops would directly contradict that neutrality and will be perceived as support for the aggressor state.

We call on all foreign states and international organizations to honor the victims of World War II and the collective victory over Nazism—without allowing that memory to be used to justify new atrocities and new wars.
