There is no basis for this comparison. Israel is dealing with convicted terrorists who have undergone a legal trial and were lawfully imprisoned. Hamas is targeting innocent civilians, kidnapping them from their homes. We must not fall into this trap. What is happening with the Egyptian forces in Sinai? Is there a chance that Egypt will launch a surprise attack against Israel?
Today there was a serious increase in the number of inquiries I received from followers regarding Egyptian forces in Sinai, apparently following a short video that was published in which Egyptian military vehicles were allegedly seen south of Rafah.
I'll start with a calming note: It's hard for me to see a situation in which Egypt, under the rule of Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, launches a surprise attack against Israel while Trump is in the White House.
Although the burns from the surprise of October 7 are still fresh, and in addition, the surprise of the Yom Kippur War, in which the Egyptian army played a major role, is etched in our collective memory, a scenario of an Egyptian surprise attack at this time and in the current political situation is simply unlikely.
This does not mean that the Egyptian arena does not raise questions and concerns that require Israeli preparation:
1. Why is Egypt arming itself with a military arsenal that indicates that its main threat is Israel?
2. What will happen if al-Sisi's rule falls and a representative of the Muslim Brotherhood rises, as already happened in Egypt after the fall of President Mubarak?
To summarize briefly: In the immediate term, I see no tangible danger, but at the same time, Israel needs to prepare for the possibility that the Egyptian military arsenal will be at the disposal of an Egyptian leader with a "less Western" agenda than al-Sisi and with a strong connection to the Muslim Brotherhood movement on the Turkey-Qatar axis (Hamas).
