Members of Poroshenko’s ‘European Solidarity’ party in Chernivtsi announced their departure from two religious communities of the ‘Moscow Patriarchate Church’ and stated that they are no longer parishioners. This was reported in a post on the official Facebook page of European Solidarity – Chernivtsi.
“Today, the religious communities of the two largest churches in Chernivtsi voted to join the Orthodox Church of Ukraine. These are the Holy Spirit Cathedral and St. Nicholas Church. Our European Solidarity team also participated in the voting and the joint prayer service,” the statement said.
When asked in the comments if any ‘European Solidarity’ members attend these Chernivtsi churches every Sunday, the head of the party’s secretariat, Vitalii Yaremchuk, referred to the UOC as the ‘Moscow Church’ and indicated that they do not attend.
The European Solidarity page also published a congratulatory message from Petro Poroshenko, in which he stated that “until now, Bukovyna was a stronghold of the ROC,” and that “the transition of the cathedral itself indicates an important shift in the consciousness of Orthodox Ukrainians.” Poroshenko did not clarify whether he himself had left the ‘ROC,’ following the example of his Chernivtsi party colleagues.

A theology professor has stated that UOC communities abroad are very numerous.
Thomas Bremer, a professor of theology at the University of Münster, published an article on the Katholisch platform titled "Ukraine Takes Action Against Its Largest Church – Now Even Abroad," in which he analyzed the activities of the UOC Diaspora.
He noted that there are about a hundred UOC communities in Europe, with 40 of them located in Germany. According to Bremer, most of these parishes are very large.
He emphasized that after Russia's invasion, the UOC began establishing communities abroad in 2022, declaring its independence from the Russian Orthodox Church.
"Many refugees come from the east and south of the country, where Russian attacks are the most intense. There are relatively few believers of the OCU and the Greek Catholic Church in these regions, so the majority of Ukrainian refugees who are Orthodox belong to the UOC," the professor wrote.
He stated that despite numerous organizational challenges, UOC church services abroad are well attended.

On February 9, 2025, in Storozhynets (Chernivtsi region), more than 2 thousand believers of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church held a procession in the city center to defend their shrines. This was reported by the UOC Information and Educational Department with reference to social networks.
On the same day, in Storozhynets city center, in Bukovina, OCU supporters held a rally and meeting, with the aim to seize two churches of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church, namely the St. George Church and the Church in the name of the Archangels Michael and Gabriel i of Storozhynets city.
Representatives of the Chernivtsi diocese became aware of the documents falsification that were supposed to confirm the so-called transitions. OCU activists collected signatures for the transition from employees of state institutions. It is noted that those employees who did not want to sign were threatened with dismissal.
Knowing about the intentions of the OCU representatives, the believers of the St. George Church and the Church in the name of the Archangels Michael and Gabriel held a meeting of religious communities after the Liturgy.
Immediately before the meeting, a prayer service was served in the parishes for peace in Ukraine and for Ukrainian soldiers, as well as a requiem for the fallen Defenders of Ukraine.
The UOC Chernivtsi diocese reports that at the meeting of religious communities, the true parishioners of the above-mentioned churches confirmed their unwavering desire to remain in the bosom of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church under the omophorion of His Beatitude Metropolitan Onufry. The total number of members of religious communities who are residents of Storozhynets and who participated in the vote is 1,845 people.
After the voting in the parishes, 63 clergymen of the Storozhynets deanery, together with about 2,000 believers, made a prayer procession to the central square of the city. There, a procession was held for the fallen soldiers near the memorial complex.
