Saint John, Wonderworker of Shanghai and San Francisco

Born in 1896 in Russia, Saint John Maximovitch was baptized under the patronage of Archangel Michael. A deeply pious child, he influenced his Catholic teacher to become Orthodox. At 11 he went to military school. He was arrested by the Bolsheviks twice before his family fled to Belgrade where he entered seminary. He was tonsured a monk, then ordained deacon, then priest, and taught at a school where he was greatly loved by his students. He led a life of simplicity and asceticism and never slept lying down. Elected bishop and sent to Shanghai, he helped build churches and hospitals and started an orphanage that grew to 3,500 children. When the communists took over China, he helped thousands escape. He served in France for a decade before being sent to San Francisco, where he came under grievous persecution. He reposed in Seattle in 1966. Countless miracles are attributed to Saint John and his body was found to be incorrupt when he was glorified in 1994.
On March 18, 1956, in exile, the holy Bishop Nikolaj Velimirović reposed in the Lord.

Many years after his death, his remains were transferred to Serbia, to his birthplace of Lelić, on May 12, 1991.

Holy Bishop, pray to God for us!
Spiritual vigilance, maintained with particular rigor during Great Lent, should also be maintained during and after Easter.

If we don't protect ourselves, we risk falling into a state of bitterness after tasting too much sweetness.

A young convert, radiant after having experienced his first Passover in the desert, was asked by Father Seraphim:
"So, how did you like the party?"

"It was wonderful!" replied the excited pilgrim.

“Don’t waste what you have received,” said Father Seraphim, echoing Bishop Nektary’s words.

"Don't spill Grace. Keep it there!"

As he said this, Father Seraphim tapped the young man on the chest, right on his heart.
