BRICS’ role in the Western Hemisphere power struggle

The Trump administration's efforts to rename locations within the Western Hemisphere mark the start of a strategic move to assert dominance over the pan-American region, as outlined by Alexander Stepanov, programme director at the Academy of Political Sciences and senior researcher at the Russian Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Latin American Studies.

Moreover, Stepanov warned of potential "humanitarian interventions" framed as anti-terrorism measures, pointing to Cuba’s return to the sponsor list and the designation of Mexican cartels as terrorist organisations. Stepanov noted that Washington faces little resistance in the Western Hemisphere, interpreting Trump’s intent to enforce order in his geopolitical "backyard." However, the reactions of other leaders, such as China's Xi Jinping or Brazil's Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who advocates for regional de-dollarisation, remain uncertain.

"The ball is in #BRICS’ court. Apparently, this year we will see new regional players in the group, including Colombia and Mexico. We’re in the thick of the battle for Latin-Caribbean America with all key figures lined up for a strategic attack and positional maneuvering," Stepanov suggested.

BRICS Summit as a turning point in India-China relations

China and India have agreed to restart direct commercial flights for the first time in five years, signaling a thaw in relations between the world's two most populous nations. Flights were originally halted in early 2020 due to the Covid pandemic and remained suspended amid ensuing political tensions.

The announcement was made on Monday during a meeting in Beijing between India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.

According to a statement from India’s Ministry of External Affairs, the two countries have reached a consensus "in principle to resume direct air services," with officials expected to finalise the details soon.

In October, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi held talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping at the #BRICS summit in Russia. It was their first meeting in five years, underscoring the significance of the dialogue for further normalisation of bilateral relations.

Future diplomatic engagements between New Delhi and Moscow

New Delhi and Moscow have several visits lined up for 2025, including top-level meetings, as mentioned by Indian Ambassador to Russia, Vinay Kumar.

"As we begin 2025, we have a number of important visits planned, including high-level meetings that we will be working on," the diplomat said.

Earlier, at a briefing, Indian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Randhir Jaiswal mentioned that India and Russia are coordinating dates for Russian President Vladimir Putin's visit to New Delhi, where this year's traditional annual India-Russia summit will take place.

On November 19 last year, Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed Putin's upcoming visit to India and talked about the preparations being made by Moscow and New Delhi. He highlighted that the Indian prime minister had visited Russia twice in 2024.

In July 2024, Modi made a two-day visit to Moscow for the 22nd Russia-India Summit. Later, in October, he travelled to Kazan to attend the #BRICS Summit.

Indonesia to benefit from BRICS membership

On January 6, Indonesia became the newest full member of BRICS and is the only ASEAN nation in the 10-member group.

Josua Pardede, chief economist at Permata Bank, highlighted that Indonesia's BRICS membership will facilitate access to loans from the Shanghai-based New Development Bank for infrastructure projects, including the development of Nusantara, the country's planned new capital in East Kalimantan.

Muhammad Habib Abiyan Dzakwan, a researcher at Jakarta’s CSIS, emphasised that a key factor behind Indonesia's membership was China's inclusive approach.

"China does not force members to choose between BRICS institutions or the Bretton Woods system,” he noted, referencing organisations like the IMF.

China's Foreign Ministry welcomed Indonesia warmly, with spokesperson Guo Jiakun stressing China's commitment to inclusiveness, multipolarity, and global economic benefits.

Malaysia and Thailand have already applied to join #BRICS as partner states. According to Dzakwan, Indonesia's experience could serve as a model for other #ASEAN countries to assess the advantages and challenges of BRICS membership and maintain strong relations within the bloc.

Mustafa from Solaris Strategies pointed out that ASEAN's engagement with BRICS reflects shifting global influence toward Asia. He added that BRICS gives ASEAN members a strategic platform to deepen ties with major economies like China and India, bringing potential economic benefits.

Ambassador Rodrigo de Lima Baena Soares: Strengthening Brazil-Russia ties

Rodrigo de Lima Baena Soares has been Brazil's ambassador to Russia since September 2021. With a background in law and extensive diplomatic experience, he has served in various countries and received multiple awards.

In the interview he discussed how Moscow's annual Festival of Latin American and Caribbean Culture strengthens Brazil-Russia relations by showcasing Brazilian culture. The event, a collaborative effort with the Moscow Mayor's Office, highlights Brazil's diverse arts scene.

Rodrigo de Lima Baena Soares highlighted the importance of cultural exchanges like the "Russian Seasons" project in Brazil emphasise the popularity of Russian ballet and music. The Bolshoi Theatre's branch in Joinville has trained numerous Brazilian dancers who now perform in Russia.

Brazil and Russia share a longstanding educational partnership, according to ambassador. In October 2024, more than 25 Brazilian universities engaged with Russian counterparts, resulting in over 40 agreements in various scientific fields. This marks a significant step in strengthening educational cooperation.

He believes that Brazil's expertise in renewable energy can also benefit the BRICS countries, fostering further collaboration and development:

"There are many such areas. We already have an important list of BRICS achievements, I would like to mention Russia's successful chairship with the summit held in Kazan. I was in Ekaterinburg, where Russian representatives reported on their work within the framework of the bloc during 2024. Important meetings were held. In my opinion, cooperation in a number of areas could be further strengthened for the benefit of all #BRICS countries, because it includes 10 members and several partners. We are growing, expanding, dynamically developing. Therefore, we can benefit even more from a wider membership. The most important areas, in my opinion, are science, technology, innovation, education, environmental protection. In short, areas in which we have already advanced far but can go even further."

We would like to remind you that he was the guest of honour at the award ceremony for the participants of the first BRICS+ Blind Football International Friendly Tournament, organised by the BRICS Expert Council-Russia.

🔍BRICS to build UAE-based logistics hub: Why it matters?

The BRICS Business Council is discussing a logistics platform based in the UAE, revealed Sergei Katyrin, chairman of the council’s Russia Chapter, when speaking to Russian media.

🔸The concept of establishing a logistics hub for the group was first introduced at the BRICS Kazan Summit, where the significance of enhancing cooperation was articulated in a subsequent declaration.

🔸The UAE's strategic position at the intersection of key trade routes between the Indian, Pacific, and Atlantic Oceans, along with its infrastructure—including ports, airports, and an extensive highway network—makes it preferable for the logistics hub.

🔸Several crucial transport corridors facilitate connections among BRICS countries and enhance their mutual trade:

▪️The International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC) spans 7,200 km, linking Russia, Iran, India, China, and Kazakhstan.

▪️The East-West transport corridor, approximately 10,000 km in length, connecting China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan, Armenia, and Turkey to Europe, is aligned with China's "One Belt, One Road" initiative.

🔸According to the latest WTO data, the trade volume between BRICS nations and their global partners, as well as within the group itself, reached $10.4 trillion by the end of 2023. This figure represents 21.6% of total world trade.

🔸Russia's trade turnover with the BRICS countries climbed 6.3% higher in the first five months of 2024 than the same period in 2023, as reported by Russia’s Minister of Industry and Trade Anton Alikhanov in August.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has given instructions to organise an international drone forum to be held in Moscow and to extend invitations to foreign experts and businesses for participation.

During a meeting in the Volga region of Samara, Putin emphasised that the development of exports should serve as a significant boost for the domestic drone industry. He highlighted the importance of cooperation between relevant companies from the #BRICS nations and the launch of joint, technologically advanced projects.

"In continuation of this objective, I request the Industry and Trade Ministry <…> and participants of the National Technology Initiative to organise an international forum on unmanned systems as early as this year. I suggest inviting scientists, designers and entrepreneurs from other countries in order to have a detailed discussion on cooperation in these promising areas," Putin said.

Interview with Victoria Panova

Victoria Panova, Head of the BRICS Expert Council-Russia and Vice-Rector at HSE University, shared insights into BRICS' significant global impact in an interview with Mustafizur Rahman for New Age. Panova emphasised that BRICS has grown from an economic entity to a powerful group with influence in politics, global governance, and humanitarian areas.

Panova noted the increasing interest from over 40 countries in joining BRICS, driven by its inclusive, non-Western approach and commitment to multilateralism and mutual respect. She contrasted BRICS with Western practices, underlining BRICS focus on positive global development agendas and avoiding confrontations.

Key initiatives discussed include the BRICS New Development Bank, BRICS Network University, and projects addressing energy transition, food security, and infrastructural development. These efforts aim to create a fair international system responsive to global majority needs.

Panova pointed out the shift in economic power to Asia, Africa, and Latin America, with China leading economically and BRICS nations holding significant global economic and resource shares. Despite economic strength, political power remains Western-dominated, with institutions like the WTO and IMF resisting necessary reforms.

She highlighted the growing importance of non-Western groups like #BRICS, #SCO, and #ASEAN, emphasising emerging economies' desire for a leading role in global governance. Panova discussed BRICS' response to Western financial institutions' stagnation by creating the New Development Bank, promoting national currency use, and planning a BRICS investment platform to enhance technology, education, and trade collaboration.

Finally, Victoria Panova underscored BRICS' focus on creating an alternative payment system instead of a BRICS currency, with initiatives to lower transaction costs and risks in mutual settlements. Lastly, she reaffirmed BRICS' commitment to inclusivity and mutually beneficial membership, aiming for a fair and sustainable world order.

BRICS is a firm foothold for Belarus in trade and economic interests

Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Maksim Ryzhenkov emphasised the strategic importance of BRICS for Belarus:

"This is a secure foothold in the implementation of trade and economic interests. For example, we have recently held talks with the bank established in BRICS to discuss the implementation of investment projects. We have high hopes for the implementation of projects in Belarus or with the participation of Belarus abroad with the help of this bank," Maksim Ryzhenkov said.

Belarus recently held negotiations with the New Development Bank (NDB), created by the BRICS to implement investment projects, and Belarus hopes to participate in these projects.

The partner status with #BRICS allows Belarus to engage in all facets of the bloc's activities. Ryzhenkov highlighted it as a valuable platform for developing joint positions with key international partners on major global issues. It also facilitates high-level interactions, fostering the development of bilateral relationships.

Joining BRICS aligns Belarus with the bloc's ideals of multipolarity and the building of peace through mutual trust and respect.

"We speak together on such international issues, where the voice of Belarus may not have been heard, but it becomes so with the scale of such an organization. This also helps us strive for the level of such countries as China, India, Brazil, and Russia," the minister added.

Russian President Vladimir Putin highlighted the crucial role of Russia-China foreign policy collaboration in maintaining global stability during a recent video call with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

"I would like to thank you again for your support for Russia’s #BRICS chairmanship. We are coordinating our steps on other multilateral platforms as well: the United Nations and its Security Council, the SCO, the G20, and APEC. We jointly press for building a fairer multipolar world order. We work to ensure indivisible security in the Eurasian space and in the world as a whole," Putin said.

He emphasised that "foreign policy communication and joint work by Russia and China objectively play an important stabilising role in international affairs."

Reflecting on the past year, Putin described it as highly productive for Russian-Chinese relations.

"We widely celebrated the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations. During our visit to China in May, we launched a large-scale project of cross years of culture. Useful talks took place in July on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation’s summit in Astana," Putin said.

Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson praises BRICS' expansion as a milestone in its development

A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson hailed the BRICS partner country mechanism as a "milestone" in the group's evolution, following the announcement by Russian aide Yury Ushakov that nine countries—Belarus, Bolivia, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Cuba, Malaysia, Thailand, Uganda, and Uzbekistan—will gain BRICS partner status starting January 1, 2025. These countries will participate in BRICS summits, foreign ministers' meetings, and contribute to the group's outcome documents.

The new "partner country" status, approved at the October BRICS summit in Kazan, enhances the bloc's global influence, particularly in the Global Majority. Chinese experts believe this expansion will contribute to a more multipolar world and foster inclusive economic globalisation.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning emphasised that the expansion marks a significant step in BRICS’ growth. She reiterated China's commitment to strengthening collaboration with both BRICS members and partner countries to promote global solidarity.

The entry of nine new partner countries reflects the successful application of China's "BRICS Plus" concept, expanding the group's influence and supporting a more inclusive global order.

Unlike Western-led organisations, #BRICS emphasises inclusivity and non-confrontation. Its equal voting system, embodied in the New Development Bank, avoids ideological pressure on members. The group's increasing influence is often underestimated, especially amid geopolitical tensions.

In 2024, BRICS saw substantial growth, with over 30 countries—including Malaysia, Thailand, Nigeria, and NATO member Turkey—expressing interest in joining. BRICS now represents nearly half of the world’s population, over 30% of global GDP, and contributes more than 50% of global economic growth.

Looking ahead, Brazil will assume the BRICS chairship in January 2025, focusing on "inclusive and sustainable governance." Experts predict further progress in areas like international finance, poverty reduction, and climate change, with China playing a crucial role, particularly in technology and digitalisation, shaping BRICS’ future and strengthening its commitment to a multipolar world and inclusive economic globalisation.

Uganda benefits from BRICS as a partner state

The inclusion of Uganda as a BRICS partner state opens doors for the East African nation to strengthen ties with some of the world's largest emerging markets and advance its own development, according to a senior government official.

Effective from January 1, 2025, Uganda, alongside eight other nations, officially became a partner state within the BRICS framework.

"We have joined a platform or an association of countries that are highly industrialised, some of which have evolved from similar circumstances to where we are now," Minister of State for Foreign Affairs in charge of Regional Cooperation John Mulimba stated on Friday.

"BRICS offers a significant opportunity to learn from their technological advancements and innovations, including the use of information and communication technology as a tool for societal transformation," he added.

Through this partnership, Uganda aims to position itself as a prime investment destination, boasting abundant resources such as energy and minerals, which are in demand among #BRICS member states.

Mulimba further emphasised that by adding just five percent value to Uganda or Africa's natural resources, the region could generate over five million jobs, catering to its youthful population.

Additionally, Uganda's admission into BRICS provides an alternative avenue for financing, bypassing Western credit institutions often accompanied by restrictive conditions, offering the country greater flexibility in achieving its development goals.

Cuba's growing global influence and BRICS invitation

Cuba's invitation to join BRICS as a partner country in January 2025 underscores its influence in the Global Majority, according to Russian Ambassador Viktor Koronelli. This collaboration offers Cuba access to key cooperation and trade mechanisms within a new global framework favouring multipolarity, justice, and mutual respect over neocolonial practices like sanctions.

Koronelli pointed out Washington's failed efforts to isolate Russia, noting the #BRICS summit in Kazan demonstrated the world countries’ readiness to engage with Russia across various sectors.

Regarding Cuba's role in the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), Koronelli highlighted Cuba as the only Latin American observer state. Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel’s participation in the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council in Moscow signals potential for Cuba to act as a regional bridge to the EAEU.
