O MARY, MY MOTHER

O Mary, my Mother, so tender, so true,
With childlike affection my spirit imbue;
As long as I linger in life here below,
Thy loving protection in bounty bestow.

If thou dost forsake me, to whom shall I go?
For thou art my refuge in weal and in woe;
The snares that surround me with trembling I see,
But one thought consoles me: that thou art with me.

Whenever I weary of warfare and strife,
Refresh me, O Mary, thou joy of my life;
Though fierce be the conflict, no foe will I fear;
I know, dearest Mother, that thine aid is near.

O Mary, my Mother, I’m longing to see
The glory that Jesus has given to thee;
In life let me truly thy child ever be,
That death may lead me to Jesus and thee.

May 8th ~ The Apparition of St. Michael the Archangel

VESPERS AND MATINS
Te splendor et virtus Patris

O JESU ! life-spring of the soul !
The Father’s Pow’r, and Glory bright !
Thee with the Angels we extol ;
From Thee they draw their life and light.

Thy thousand thousand hosts are spread,
Embattled o’er the azure sky ;
But Michael bears thy standard dread,
And lifts the mighty Cross on high.

He in that Sign the rebel powers
Did with their Dragon Prince expel ;
And hurl’d them from the Heaven’s high towers,
Down like a thunderbolt to hell.

Grant us with Michael still, O Lord,
Against the Prince of Pride to fight ;
So may a crown be our reward,
Before the Lamb’s pure throne of light.

Now to the Father, and the Son,
Who rose from death, all glory be ;
With Thee, O holy Comforter,
Henceforth through all eternity.

QUEEN of MAY

Bright, spotless maiden, Heav'nly courts adorning,
For endless years our happy eyes to greet,
Joy of the angels, gentle star of morning,
Hasten the day when we in Heav'n shall meet.

CHORUS
Ah! what a joy, dear Mother, thee to see,
And be in Heaven near thee, eternally!

God's love around thee clothes thee with a splendor
Eye hath not seen nor heart of man conceived;
God's blessed angels their fond homage render,
Sing evermore the work in thee achieved. —Chorus.

Joy of the ransomed saints, thy love proclaiming,
See in thy smile the love of thy dear Son,
Love that redeemed them, grace that e'er sustained them,
Till the long strife on earth was happily done.—Chorus.

JESUS RISEN

1.
All hail ! dear Conqueror ! all hail !
Oh what a victory is Thine !
How beautiful Thy strength appears,
Thy crimson Wounds, how bright they shine !
2.
Thou camest at the dawn of day ;
Armies of souls around Thee were,
Blest spirits, thronging to adore
Thy Flesh, so marvellous, so fair.
3.
The everlasting Godhead lay
Shrouded within those Limbs Divine,
Nor left untenanted one hour
That sacred Human Heart of Thine.
4.
They worshipped Thee, those ransomed souls,
With the fresh strength of love set free ;
They worshipped joyously, and thought
Of Mary while they looked on Thee.

THE SEVEN DOLOURS OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY
VESPERS

Stabat Mater dolorosa
(continued from above)

Bruis’d, derided, curs’d, defil’d,
She beheld her tender Child
All with bloody scourges rent ;
For the sins of His own nation,
Saw Him hang in desolation,
Till His Spirit forth He sent.

O thou Mother! fount of love !
Touch my spirit from above,
Make my heart with thine accord :
Make me feel as thou hast felt ;
Make my soul to glow and melt
With the love of Christ my Lord.

Translation:
Mary, Mother of grace,
Sweet Mother of mercy,
Protect us from the enemy,
And receive us at the hour of death.

Jesus, to Thee be glory,
Who was born of the Virgin,
With the Father and the Holy Spirit,
Unto everlasting ages. Amen.

3
O Virgin most tender, our homage we render,
Thy love and protection, sweet Mother, to win;
In danger defend us, in sorrow befriend us,
And shield our fond hearts from contagion of sin. [Chorus]

4
Of Mothers the dearest, oh, wilt thou be nearest,
When life with temptation is darkly replete?
Forsake us, oh never! our hearts, be they ever
As pure as the lilies we lay at thy feet. [Chorus]

JESUS WE ADORE THY PRESENCE
The Blessed Sacrament

Jesus we adore Thy presence
In this holy Sacrament;
Let these prayers with the incense
To Thy majesty ascend.
That Thy grace and tender mercy
May be with us to the end.

Jesus our consolation,
Thou the life, the truth, the way,
Give us grace and salvation,
As we humbly trust and pray.
Let Thy blessing and Thy mercy
Follow us from day to day.

HYMN for EASTER-SUNDAY
O filii et filiæ
(continued)

Then straightway one in white they see,
Who saith, “Ye seek the Lord; but He
Is ris’n, and gone to Galilee."

This told they Peter, told they John;
Who forthwith to the tomb are gone,
But Peter is by John outrun.

That self-same night, while out of fear
The doors were shut, their Lord most dear
To his Apostles did appear.

But Thomas, when of this he heard,
Was doubtful of his brethren’s word;
Wherefore again there comes the Lord.

“Thomas, behold my side,” saith He;
“My hands, my feet, my body see,
And doubt not, but believe in Me.”

When Thomas saw that wounded side,
The truth no longer he denied;
“Thou art my Lord and God !" he cried.

Oh, blest are they who have not seen
Their Lord, and yet believe in Him !
Eternal life awaiteth them.

Now let us praise the Lord most high,
And strive His name to magnify
On this great day, through earth and sky :

Whose mercy ever runneth o’er;
Whom men and Angel Hosts adore;
To Him be glory evermore.

FEAST OF THE SEVEN DOLOURS OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY

(The same continued)

LAUDS
Virgo virginum præclara

VIRGIN of all virgins best !
Listen to my fond request :
Let me share thy grief divine ;
Let me, to my latest breath,
In my body bear the death
Of that dying Son of thine.

Wounded with His every wound,
Steep my soul till it hath swoon’d
In His very blood away ;
Be to me, O Virgin, nigh,
Lest in flames I burn and die,
In His awful Judgment day.

Christ, when Thou shalt call me hence,
Be thy Mother my defence,
Be Thy Cross my victory ;
While my body here decays,
May my soul Thy goodness praise,
Safe in Paradise with Thee.

WE HAIL THEE, SMILING MAY

CHORUS
We hail thee, smiling May,
Sweet Mary's month art thou,
We bring thy buds today
To twine upon her brow.

Sweet May, thou art a month of flowers,
Thy paths are fair and green;
And of thy beauteous woods and bow'rs
Our Mother is the Queen:
And at her altars, day by day
We'll come, our sweetest gifts to lay.—Chorus

Sweet Mary, Queen of all the May,
Thy care to us impart;
And draw us nearer, day by day,
To Jesus' Sacred Heart;
And then, loved Mother, we shall be
Dear to thy blessed Son and thee.—Chorus

LAUDS
Christe, sanctorum decus angelorum
(continued from above)

Angel of Strength ! thou, Gabriel, cast out
Thine ancient foes, usurpers of thy reign ;
The temples of thy triumph round the globe
Revisit once again.

And Raphael, Physician of the soul,—
Let him descend from his pure halls of light,
To heal the sick, and guide each doubtful course
Through all our life aright.

Thou too, O Virgin, with the angel choirs,
Mother of Light, and Queen of Peace! descend ;
And bring with thee the radiant Court of Heav'n,
Thy children to befriend.

This grace on us bestow, O Father blest ;
And thou, O Son by an eternal birth ;
With Thee, from both proceeding, Holy Ghost,
Whose glory fills the earth.

Bring Flowers of the Rarest

1
Bring flow'rs of the rarest, bring flow'rs of the fairest,
From garden and woodland, and hillside and vale;
Our full hearts are swelling, our glad voices telling
The praise of the loveliest Rose of the dale.

Chorus:
O Mary! we crown thee with blossoms today,
Queen of the Angels, Queen of the May,
O Mary, we crown thee with blossoms today,
Queen of the Angels, Queen of the May.

2
Our voices ascending, in harmony blending,
Oh! thus may our hearts turn, dear Mother, to thee;
Oh! thus shall we prove thee how truly we love thee,
How dark, without Mary, life's journey would be. [Chorus]

VISITS TO THE BLESSED SACRAMENT
How Sweet to be with Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament
Cant. v. 1: “I to my beloved, and my beloved to me, who feedeth among the lilies.”

1
O Jesu, it were surely sweet
To sit and listen at Thy feet,
With those who in Thy life drew near
Thy words of wondrous grace to hear.
2
And it were sweet to walk with Thee,
Along the shores of Galilee :
Or, safe embarked in Peter’s boat,
O’er it’s blue waves with Thee to float.
3
Yet sweeter far it is to pray
Before Thine altar night and day,
And feel the love that bids Thee lie
Thus wrapt in holiest mystery.
4
Yes, Jesus! Thou art hidden thus
On this poor earth for love of us,
And yet upon Thine altar-throne,
Too oft we leave Thee all alone.
5
Ah, since it is Thy chief delight
To dwell with us both day and night,
Sweet Jesus! make it ours to be
Both night and day to stay with Thee.

HYMN for EASTER-SUNDAY
O filii et filiæ

YE sons and daughters of the Lord !
The King of glory, King ador’d,
This day Himself from death restor’d.

All in the early morning grey
Went holy women on their way,
To see the tomb where Jesus lay.

Of spices pure a precious store
In their pure hands those women bore,
To anoint the sacred Body o’er.

HYMN ~ Feast of the Annunciation
Quis te canat mortalium

'Twas not thy guileless faith alone,
That lifted Thee so high ;
’Twas not thy pure seraphic love,
Or peerless chastity :

But, oh ! it was thy lowliness,
Well pleasing to the Lord,
That made Thee worthy to become
The Mother of the Word.

Oh, Loftiest !—whose humility
So sweet it was to see !
That God, forgetful of Himself,
Abas’d Himself to Thee !

Praise to the Father, with the Son,
And Holy Ghost, through Whom
The Word eternal was conceiv’d
Within the Virgin’s womb.

LAUDS
Christe, sanctorum decus angelorum

O CHRIST ! the beauty of the angel worlds !
Of man the Maker and Redeemer blest !
Grant us one day to mount the path of light,
And in thy glory rest.

Angel of Peace ! thou, Michael, from above,
Come down, amid the homes of man to dwell ;
And banish wars, with all their tears and blood,
Back to their native Hell.

THIS IS THE MONTH OF MARY

This is the month of Mary,
The fairest child of Spring;
O Virgin Mother, hear us,
And list thou while we sing.
We'll decorate thy Altar
With flowers sweet and fair;
Each tongue thy praise shall falter,
Our hearts we'll offer there.

CHORUS
This is the month of Mary,
The fairest child of Spring;
O Virgin Mother, hear us,
And list thou while we sing.

The glen most deeply shaded,
For emblems seek the dale,
In its pureness all unfaded
Find the pride of the vale;
Fair lilies, signs of pureness,
And Violets sweet conceal,
A gentle voice assures us,
They Mary's charms reveal.—Chorus

JESUS RISEN
Hymn
(continued from above)

5.
And Thou, too, Soul of Jesus ! Thou
Towards that sacred Flesh didst yearn,
And for the beatings of that Heart
How ardently Thy love did burn.
6.
They worshipped, while the beauteous Soul
Paused by the Body's wounded Side :—
Bright flashed the cave,— before them stood
The Living Jesus Glorified.
7.
Down, down, all lofty things on earth,
And worship Him with joyous dread !
O Sin ! thou art outdone by love !
Death ! thou art discomfited !
8.
Ye Heavens, how sang they in your courts,
How sang the angelic choirs that day,
When from His tomb the imprisoned God,
Like the strong sunrise, broke away ?
9.
Oh I am burning so with love,
I fear lest I should make too free ;
Let me be silent and adore
Thy glorified Humanity.
10.
Ah ! new Thou sendest me sweet tears ;
Fluttered with love, my spirits fail,—
What shall I say? Thou knowst my heart ;
All hail ! dear Conqueror ! all hail !

EASTER SUNDAY
Victimæ Paschali laudes
Sequence

FORTH to the paschal Victim, Christians, bring
Your sacrifice of praise :

The Lamb redeems the sheep ;
And Christ, the Sinless One,
Hath to the Father sinners reconcil’d.

Together, Death and Life
In a strange conflict strove ;
The Prince of Life, who died,
Now lives and reigns.

What thou sawest, Mary, say,
As thou wentest on the way.

I saw the tomb wherein the Living One had lain ;
I saw His glory as He rose again;
Napkin and linen clothes, and Angels twain :
Yea, Christ is risen, my hope, and He
Will go before you into Galilee.

We know that Christ indeed has risen from the grave :
Hail, thou King of Victory !
Have mercy, Lord, and save.

Te Deum
(continued)

Heaven and earth are full * of the Majesty of thy glory.
The glorious company of the Apostles * praise thee.
The goodly fellowship of the Prophets * praise thee.
The noble army of Martyrs * praise thee.
The holy Church throughout all the world * doth acknowledge thee;
The Father, * of an infinite Majesty.
Thine honourable, true, * and only Son;
Also the Holy Ghost, * the Comforter.
Thou art the King of Glory, * O Christ.
Thou art the everlasting * Son of the Father.

During the following verse all make a profound bow:
When thou tookest upon thee to deliver man, * thou didst not abhor the Virgin's womb.

When thou hadst overcome the sharpness of death, * thou didst open the Kingdom of Heaven to all believers.
Thou sittest at the right hand of God, * in the glory of the Father.
We believe that thou shalt come * to be our Judge.

Kneel for the following verse
We therefore pray thee, help thy servants, * whom thou hast redeemed with thy precious Blood.

Make them to be numbered with thy Saints, * in glory everlasting.
O Lord, save thy people, * and bless thine heritage.
Govern them, * and lift them up for ever.
Day by day * we magnify thee;

During the following verse, by local custom, all make a profound bow.
And we worship thy Name * ever, world without end.

Vouchsafe, O Lord, to keep us * this day without sin.
O Lord, have mercy upon us, * have mercy upon us.
O Lord, let thy mercy lighten upon us, * as our trust is in thee.
O Lord, in thee have I trusted, * let me never be confounded.
