🔵⚜️✝️ April 29, 1429: Joan of Arc enters Orléans

Avoiding the English, Jehanne d'Arc and her troop arrive at the city of Orleans, which has been under siege for seven months by an invading English army.

On 29 April 1429, coming out of the lowered drawbridge of the Burgundy Gate, the reinforcement sent by Charles VII to rescue and supply the city arrives, as announced three days ago.

Here she is, preceded by her standard proudly carried by her young page Louis de Coutes, Jehanne d'Arc fully armed except for her head, riding a superb white steed offered by the dauphin.

Next to her is John the Bastard of Orleans who has been defending the city for several months and will never leave it again.

They are followed by the troop of 200 lances that Charles VII sends to his good city to rescue it. In the long column, the armour of some of the best captains of the time shines: Ambroise de Loré, Culan, Gilles de Retz, Boussac with their companies.

The town is illuminated by torches flickering above a gathered population, delirious with enthusiasm. The entire garrison of the city's defenders was there to welcome this ardent messenger of Heaven on whom all hopes were based.

And above all, among these warriors, there are also those faithful defenders of the French cause, the Scots who have survived their recent harsh ordeals at Verneuil and Rouvray. They are the Scots who make up a third of our armies, all archers, in splendid red, white and green uniforms bearing the "Fleur-de-Lys" motto on their chests.

Faithful to their traditions as well as to their Gaelic language, these Scots have also preserved the proud warlike fanfare of their ancestors. So as soon as Jehanne enters the city, the pipes, trumpets and bagpipes sound for her the March of the Soldiers of Robert Bruce, the victorious march of the battle of Bannockburn (1314).

After several sorties at the head of her troops, Jehanne forces the enemy to lock themselves in the bastilles around the city. The besiegers in turn become besieged. They have no relations with each other and find it very difficult to support each other.

The Dauphin's troops decided to attack these bastilles one by one... On 8 May, Orléans was liberated!

The fanfares of the first Empire perpetuated the memory of this march. And today, during the taking of arms, "Robert Bruce's Marche des soldats" is, like the "Marche de La Garde Consulaire at Marengo", generally played during the review of the troops by the military authority presiding over the ceremony.

ON THIS DAY IN 1865...Gen. Forrest Surrenders His Cavalry Division

Lt. General Nathan Bedford Forrest Farewell Address to His Troops

Headquarters, Forrest's Cavalry Corps
Gainsville, Alabama
May 9, 1865

SOLDIERS:

By an agreement made between Lieut.-Gen. Taylor, commanding the Department of Alabama. Mississippi, and East Louisiana, and Major-Gen. Canby, commanding United States forces, the troops of this department have been surrendered.
I do not think it proper or necessary at this time to refer to causes which have reduced us to this extremity; nor is it now a matter of material consequence to us how such results were brought about. That we are BEATEN is a self-evident fact, and any further resistance on our part would justly be regarded as the very height of folly and rashness.

The armies of Generals LEE and JOHNSON having surrendered. You are the last of all the troops of the Confederate States Army east of the Mississippi River to lay down your arms.

The Cause for which you have so long and so manfully struggled, and for which you have braved dangers, endured privations, and sufferings, and made so many sacrifices, is today hopeless. The government which we sought to establish and perpetuate, is at an end. Reason dictates and humanity demands that no more blood be shed. Fully realizing and feeling that such is the case, it is your duty and mine to lay down our arms -- submit to the “powers that be” -- and to aid in restoring peace and establishing law and order throughout the land.

The terms upon which you were surrendered are favorable, and should be satisfactory and acceptable to all. They manifest a spirit of magnanimity and liberality, on the part of the Federal authorities, which should be met, on our part, by a faithful compliance with all the stipulations and conditions therein expressed. As your Commander, I sincerely hope that every officer and soldier of my command will cheerfully obey the orders given, and carry out in good faith all the terms of the cartel.

Those who neglect the terms and refuse to be paroled, may assuredly expect, when arrested, to be sent North and imprisoned. Let those who are absent from their commands, from whatever cause, report at once to this place, or to Jackson, Miss.; or, if too remote from either, to the nearest United States post or garrison, for parole.
Civil war, such as you have just passed through naturally engenders feelings of animosity, hatred, and revenge. It is our duty to divest ourselves of all such feelings; and as far as it is in our power to do so, to cultivate friendly feelings towards those with whom we have so long contended, and heretofore so widely, but honestly, differed. Neighborhood feuds, personal animosities, and private differences should be blotted out; and, when you return home, a manly, straightforward course of conduct will secure the respect of your enemies. Whatever your responsibilities may be to Government, to society, or to individuals meet them like men.

The attempt made to establish a separate and independent Confederation has failed; but the consciousness of having done your duty faithfully, and to the end, will, in some measure, repay for the hardships you have undergone.

In bidding you farewell, rest assured that you carry with you my best wishes for your future welfare and happiness. Without, in any way, referring to the merits of the Cause in which we have been engaged, your courage and determination, as exhibited on many hard-fought fields, has elicited the respect and admiration of friend and foe. And I now cheerfully and gratefully acknowledge my indebtedness to the officers and men of my command whose zeal, fidelity and unflinching bravery have been the great source of my past success in arms.

I have never, on the field of battle, sent you where I was unwilling to go myself; nor would I now advise you to a course which I felt myself unwilling to pursue. You have been good soldiers, you can be good citizens.

Local leader of the Legion of the Archangel Saint-Michel, brilliant but ephemeral director of culture and theaters of the legionary national government, author of the words of the magnificent songs "Holy legionary youth", "The struggle of the workers" or the hymn to Ion Moța and Vasiliu Marin, he was imprisoned by the royal dictatorship of Charles II, the regime of Marshal Antonescu and finally that of the communists, after being seriously injured on the eastern front where he had been assigned to a disciplinary unit in because of his membership in the Iron Guard.

He is now recognized as one of the greatest Romanian literary geniuses of the twentieth century.

"In Aiud, Radu Gyr brought Jesus into the cell. He took him down from the Cross and brought him with us to the carpet with books for the deification of man. He was the patriarch and the encouragement from the prisoners of Aiud. Through him beauty and spirit continued to shine in the deep darkness."

Isabel I of Castile, known as Isabel the Catholic, was born on 22 April 1451 in Madrigal de las Altas Torres and died on 26 November 1504 in Medina del Campo. She was queen of Castile and Leon from 1474 to 1504, queen of Aragon, Mallorca, Valencia, Sardinia, Sicily (1479-1504) and Naples (1503-1504).

Wife of Fernando of Aragon, she left her mark on her era through her piety and political foresight.

Spain owes her its unification, the reconquest of Granada, the last piece of the peninsula snatched from the hands of the Muslim invaders after centuries of heroic struggle, and the expulsion of the Jews, zealous collaborators of the latter in their occupation of Iberia, who had become false Christians in order to adapt to the new masters.

The world owes her the end of the barbaric superstitions of pre-Columbian America and its Christianisation.

She will remain the pious queen who prepared Spain for its golden age.

🔴 9 May 1994: Sébastien Deyzieu? Here!

On 7 May 1994, Sébastien Deyzieu, a 22-year-old Œuvre française activist, responded to a call to demonstrate against American imperialism. He found himself at the Place Denfert-Rochereau at 5pm, where the republican cops had amassed in large numbers. The repression was merciless: they violently attacked the young Frenchmen: 107 were arrested while others, alone or in groups, managed to escape. Among them was Sébastien, who was pursued mercilessly by Pasqua's men. The young activist thought he had found refuge in a building at 4 rue des Chartreux. In circumstances that have never been explained, he falls from the 4th floor into the courtyard of the building, where he is handcuffed in agony and...

🔥🇨🇵 April 22, 1961: French army tries to take power in Algeria

➡️ The putsch of the generals or putsch of Algiers

On Saturday 22 April, the population of Algiers learns at 7 o'clock in the morning, by a message read on the radio that "the army has taken control of Algeria and the Sahara".

During the night, parachutists and legionnaires took over all the nerve centres of Algiers.

The three generals, Maurice Challe, Edmond Jouhaud and André Zeller, in agreement with colonels Godart, Argoud and Lacheroy, had the government delegate general, Jean Morin, the Minister of Transport, Robert Buron, who was on a trip, and a certain number of civil and military authorities arrested without resistance.

But they refused to give weapons to the Blackfeet (nickname for the French and European settlers in Algeria) who supported them. The four generals acclaimed by the crowd in the forum in Algiers It was not a question of taking power; what was important was "pacification".

Challe felt frustrated by the victory he had expected and promised his officers not to abandon Algeria.

With this coup de force, they intended to keep the oath made by the army to keep Algeria for France.

Some regiments put themselves under the orders of the generals.

In Paris, the police arrested General Jacques Faure, six other officers and a few civilians involved in the "Paris plot", which was supposed to relay the uprising to the metropolis, at six in the morning.

A state of emergency was declared in Algeria.

The left-wing parties, the unions and the League of Human Rights called for a demonstration of "the opposition of workers and democrats to the coup de force in Algiers".

At around 7 p.m., General Challe spoke on the radio in Algiers: "I am in Algiers with Generals Zeller and Jouhaud, and in liaison with General Salan to keep our oath, the army's oath to guard Algeria so that our dead will not have died in vain. A government of abandonment [...] is preparing today to hand over Algeria definitively to the external organisation of the rebellion. The army will not fail in its mission and the orders I will give you will never have any other purpose."
